Marines Hut Restoration Project

Help us finish restoring this great little WWII US Marines Hut

The MenzShed Kapiti has already put hundreds of volunteer hours into restoring and rebuilding this 1942 four-man Marines Hut so the Trust can turn it into a unique little museum that tells the story of the how over 15,000 US Marines were housed in Kapiti during WWII.

With the help of generous sponsorship building is now complete, and the hut has been taken from the MenzShed depot in Waikanae to its new home next to the US Marines Memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park. We now need to raise another $35,000 for the interior fit-out so the public can learn about the three Kapiti Marines camps were built by Kiwis in just six weeks.

Looking through a viewing window people will be able to see a diorama showing how the Marines lived in the building. Looking through a side window they’ll be able to operate an exterior switch to see a series of five short videos showing how and why the camps were built.
