New Zealand Remembers …
The 70th anniversary of the Friendly Invasion of New Zealand by U.S.Armed Forces 1942-44
May 19-26, 2013
Find your old photos, your address book, and your war-time treasures and come “down under” for a trip back to your “home away from home”.
Visit your old camp site, enjoy some first-class kiwi hospitality, meet kiwis who lived through the times, and be part of a Memorial Day event you won’t forget.
Along the way you can ‘live it up in Wellington (“the coolest little capital in the world) visit Rotorua and Taupo, go to a Maori concert party and be part of the June 14 festivities in Wellington. It’s our shout!
For two brief years from 1942-1944 15,000 U.S.Marines living in Camps Paekakariki, Mackay and Russell out-numbered locals in southern Kapiti by 15-1. Nearly 8,000 Marines were also stationed in camps at Titahi Bay, Porirua, Plimmerton, Pauatahanui and Judgeford in our neighbouring Porirua District.
No wonder the memories live on; bits of the old camps are still buried in our gardens, and our parents and grandparents remember the sound of gun-fire in the hills, the sight of armoured vehicles practising manoeuvres in the parks, the spectacle of leathernecks marching through Wellington, and those “famous” dances.
We remember you as friends when we needed you, we remember you came to our aid, and we remember your sacrifices in the Pacific War.
